Vacuuming your home is a vital part of maintaining a clean and healthy carpet. Vacuums aren’t a cheap appliance to buy for your household so doing the correct research into buying a vacuum that best suits your home is a vital part of the process, you also want a vacuum that is going to last you… and your money, many years.

When you buy a new vacuum you want to implement a routine to maintain the effectiveness and prolong its lifespan. You can prevent this damage and excessive wear and keep your machine working great for as long as possible by following these tips!

1) Try before you buy

There’s nothing worse than just jumping into buying something so vital for your household. You wouldn’t just buy the first house or car you saw, you’d go out a research within the market and if the first product still caught your eye you’d then invest your time into researching why you want that product. Ok, enough explaining, but the process should be the same for a vacuum.

The purpose of a vacuum is not to deep clean, but it is there to maintain and prevent dirt and other things building up within your carpet.  We recommend vacuuming 2-3 times a week, so for an appliance to be used so frequently it needs to last.

There are so many different types, models and brands that offer so many different features, so research is key.

2) For bagless vacuums

Bag-less vacuum cleaners store the excess rubbish and remains in a ‘removable bin’ that is built within the vacuum normally at the front, but with design becoming more extravagant they can be located anywhere!

Not everyone empties the bin before they use their vacuum and this is why they may encounter problems before people who empty the bin before they use their vacuum. Emptying the bin will give you optimal efficiency at the start of your cleaning session; it also reduces the risk of built of dirt and debris from harming your vacuum.

Rinsing the bin as well is something we highly recommend as this again, prevents the build up of dirt and debris. Just by emptying and giving the bin a quick rinse after you’ve used the vacuum, will just contribute to maintaining the quality of how you vacuum works.

Also- don’t over fill the removable bin just as you would with a bagged vacuum, the implications remain the same.

3) For bagged vacuums

The classic bagged vacuum has a bag in which they store all of the dust, dirt and debris that is picked up from your floor. Not only does the bag act as a filter, but bagged vacuums also have a second filter that acts as an air purifier.

The thing to remember with a bagged vacuum is to always remember to monitor how full the bag is and can get and dispose of it as soon as it gets full. Although the bags have a large capacity- they do fill up quickly and the fuller the bag gets the less efficient the vacuum becomes.

The bag is obviously full of the dirt and debris that its collected from the floor, so stop using it once its full. If you don’t then the damage that the device will receive will be quite significant- as well as it making a BIG mess. The machine will continue to pick up the dirt regardless of minimal to no space with nowhere to go, the small particle of dirt will make its way into the internal components of your vacuum cleaner and just circulate back to the floor. So make sure you keep an eye on the bag!

4) Clean the filters and rollers!

The filters in a vacuum should be cleaned or replaced on a regular basis. The filters ‘job’ is to catch fine dust that you can pick up from the floor by trapping their fibres. Without the filter, the finer debris would escape from the machine and return back into the room and into the air. The filters pick up a lot of dirt over time and progressively become more and more ineffective and the less your vacuum will be able to clean.

The specific for maintaining your filter may vary in regards to the make and model of your vacuum and the specifics for filter maintenance can usually be found in the manual.

The brush roller is a spinning device that comes in contact with your floor an helps pick up the dirt and debris embedded within. The roller usually has bristles attached and this can cause a lot of hair and dust to become attached to them- leading to not being able to pick up any debris. Not only does this prevent your carpet getting a deep clean but it also makes it dirtier as its essentially just spreading the dirt across your floor.

Cleaning the roller can be very tricky, depending on the make and model of your vacuum. The information can usually be found in the owners manual or online (you’ll normally need a screwdriver to remove the flat plate on the bottom- depending on the model).

Proper care = Longer life!

Just remember this when you come to vacuum next time!
